Let us introduce you to a hidden gem our my hometown - Bryerswood Youth Camp. For a better part of Danielle's career, she worked in non profit - helping to drive the mission of worthy causes in our community. She joined various boards, volunteered on committees, and even coached her kids’ soccer teams. When her daughter started attending activities at Camp Bryerswood with her Girl Guides Squad, she quickly learned about a group of passionate guiders working hard to purchase the camp for future generations of kids to enjoy, learn and grow.
As a kid, Danielle's mom had her involved in Brownies (a division of Girl Guides). Danielle's fondest memories were those of when she attended overnight camp. It was so much fun! Making new friends, singing songs, doing crafts and of course - roasting marshmallows. Today, her daughter has enjoyed the same traditions with her Girl Guide squad, which is why this project means so much to us - and why she got involved over 2 years ago with this group. Watching her daughter learn and grow through camp has really opened her eyes to the need for kids to participate in more outdoor learning activities.
The Bryerswood Optimist Club has an agreement with Girl Guides of Canada for the purchase of the property known as Camp Bryerswood - an important asset in our community. Nestled on 25 acres of land, Bryerswood offers log cabins, walking trails, ponds, outdoor play areas, pavilions, kitchens and more to serve youth ages 4 to 18 living in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent Counties. Many of the Bryerswood organization volunteers have over 30 years of experience, providing structured programs for thousands of kids. We look forward to helping a project that will develop fun and innovative year-round camp experiences that foster self-esteem, leadership, life skill development, essential outdoor skills and environmental education.
The pandemic has shown us that children thrive on human interaction, outdoor play, time away from electronics, and being around others. Going to camp provides all this and more, with a real opportunity for our youth to develop long-term friendships and to learn how to be successful in life.
Our Banners for Charity give back is a way for Fun In The Box to help this worthy project. As a member of the Bryerswood Camp Fundraising committee, Michelle and I, our kids and friends are using our talents to paint banners to help raise money towards the purchase of the camp. Our goal is to raise $25,000 (that’s a lot of banners) toward the $500,000 needed for this project.
